I love this article. This was a championship for the basketball purists. Yes flash is nice for the highlight reels but for the sport in it’s purest form Tim Duncan is the poster child. There will never be another like him. He didn’t leave college early. He stuck with one team for his entire career. He’s all about the fundamentals, he shares the ball he’s humble and as the article says is very deserving of being considered for the NBA Mount Rushmore.
For the next 48 hours, Tim Duncan will be at the center of the NBA spotlight. This doesn’t happen often, just for the few days after the San Antonio Spurs win an NBA title, as they did Sunday night for the fifth time in 15 years.
It’s not that Tim Duncan is underrated, nor that he’s overlooked. It’s just that his game is so undeniably great and drama-free that there’s nothing to argue about. He’s vanilla ice cream. He’s a chocolate chip cookie. Tim Duncan is appreciated by all, but a favorite only of the purists.
His highlight reel isn’t sexy. Outlet passes, face-up baskets, off-hand layups and rebounds born from positioning make not a mix tape. And it’s impossible to quantify one of his best assets: Making everyone around him better. How great would Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard be without Duncan leading the charge?
